Caterpillar Killer

ECHO farm associate, Beth Adams presented an overview the the applied technologies being demonstrated on the farm that could be used throughout the developing world. When she reached the topic of plant protection and treatment, she told a story of her experience with gardening at a sub-Sahara refugee camp. She observed that her cabbage patch was being overtaken by caterpillars and became concerned that she would have to spray the produce with pesticides. Some of here students tol her that they had used the leaves of tephrosia vogelii (fish bean) to kill caterpillars. So she tried it and it kelled every caterpillar overnight.

When this story was shared to us, about half of the class chuckled and glanced at me, maybe, because of my conservationist and humanitarian expressions. I laughed even more because the group had no idea about my experience with Caterpillar Squash.

Food: Breakfast was two peanut butter and banana sandwiches, and an almond muffin. The peanut butter has been left from past visitors.

Lunch included more bananas and another muffin with a potato cooked and mashed in with a variety of spices.

Dinner for the evening brought more bananas, a muffin, and peach pie.
