Banana Barter

Had a couple of the free-Fair-Trade waste-stream bananas. Walking through campus, picked up some pizza crust, an apple, and a BBQ chicken wrap. Later, Beth gave me a loaf of banana nut bread (delicious). She made the bread by including the waste-stream fair-trade bananas. Not a hand-out, Not a purchase. I laid out my ground rules to a few people in the room, explaining a slight dilemma in accepting the loaf. Dan (burlap TOMS Shoes) had the idea when he took the loaf and dropped it in the trash can! The folks in the room didn't understand immediately. They reminded me that it was a barter, a trade, a Fair-Trade. The banana bunch for the banana bread. I accept. Also, I shared the bread with Dan and another classmate, and Beth cooked and shared another loaf with her friends. So the waste-stream is getting around.

After a sweep of the library, I offered the found chicken to Dan. I really thought he would dig the chicken, as he didn't understand why someone would throw that much away. He reminded me that he is working on a new diet at well; Vegetarian? No meat? what kind of meat? He hasn't described his parameters, such as eggs, milk, Phish, fast-food, canned goods, processed food; because these areas are also energy intensive or in many ways, unsustainable. Who do I think I am that I can feed so much grain to livestock while leaving my neighbors left to die of hunger today. Or, if I don't know where the food came from, I've been assuming the worst to reinforce my choices. But his diet is sure to evolve though the journey. The last we talked about his reasons, he mentioned something about the amount of energy that goes into meat, or livestock. It sounds like a good enough reason to me...eating lower on the food-chain.
