today I was eating a granola bar and 3/4 of the way through I thought " I'm full and I don't want to eat this, anymore" but then I thought "crap, then it will be in the waste stream" so I ate it and now you may be responsible for weight gain.---
I have a photo posted of my impulsive packing job. you can see I brought a pair of shorts, a shirt, and random varieties of socks. That and the cloths i'm wearing with a pull-over sweater, thats all i seemed to pack. Everything else was food! Cheese, loaf of bread, party mix, potatoes, graham crackers, bacon, and caramel corn mix. Life is good, I realize im not all that dependent on material possessions. Food is my concern.
From Feb, 3 2010 I've been solid on living from the waste stream, I havn't bought food, taken handouts or stolen food. In the beginning, I got rid of my perishable goods because the commitment is to live off of food that is going to waste only.
First day at ECHO class sessions

for lunch I cooked one of the potatoes I brought, but rounded up some tomato and lettuce being discarded today. Also picked up a used apple that I ate in complete. A photo shows the bowl i prepare in the community kitchen.
Dinner was a social event at the Host's house. Nothing for me, it seemed like everyone cleaned their plates. I just snacked later, on the party mix i brought
During dinner of got to witness one of my new friends do some decision making about cleaning of her dinner plate. She identified with us that their was a tomato chunk left on her plate with all types of tiny good greens and seasonings stuck on it. She shared that she doesn't really like tomatoes all that much and would rather throw it away, that if she was at a house were not cleaning a plate might offend the host she would have cleaned it. Then, I recall her mentioning something about starving children, and that one more bite wouldn't be impossible. Yes, another testimony of another plate cleaned!
saving food waste, one plate, one bite, at a time.
We took a comprehensive tour of the farm today. To keep it brief, I ate a Loquat, saw the mating rituals of lizards, and tasted Moringa tree leaves.
"I realize im not all that dependent on material possessions. Food is my concern."
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm. Food isn't a material possession? Those two sentences have my wheels spinning. May have to discuss this with you when you're not busy saving the world. Pencil me in?
Oh, and you saw the mating rituals of lizards?? Your day > my day
In response to Sarah:
ReplyDelete"For what are your possessions but things you keep and guard for fear you may need them tomorrow?
And tomorrow, what shall tomorrow bring to the overprudent dog burying bones in the trackless sand as he follows the pilgrims to the holy city?
And what is fear of need but need itself?
Is not dread of thirst when your well is full, thirst that is unquenchable?
... Therefore give now, that the season of giving may be yours and not your inheritors'.
You often say, 'I would give, but only to the deserving.'
The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture.
They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish.
Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and his nights is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream."
-Khalil Gibran
Beautiful. Perfect. Thank you, truly.
ReplyDeleteKhalil Gibran is one of my favorites:
"Coming generations will learn equality from poverty, and love from woes."
I feel that Wayne would appreciate that one. And, of course, I'd still like to discuss food as material possessions with you, WAM. :)
Thank you, again.
