Righteous Porkchop: finding a life and good food beyond factory farms
Road Trip with classmates Bert, Emily and Beth, to Allegheny College, Michael Pollan speaking event. Good stuff, I've read two of his books, so he didn't present much life changing information. But, by being there amongst like-minded friends I feel more powerful in moving forward. He spoke allot about food. Currently, we (America) have an industrial food chain and need to be moving (back) toward a sun powered food system. Our current system supports the oil crisis, our unheathy food chain (obesity, diabetes), and our ecosystems changing climate.

"The U.S. Gov. subsidizes the least healthy food with our Farm Bill, we need to encourage healthy food."
For the moment, I regret not taking photos, not taking my good camera, not taking my audio recorder, all of which I planned on doing, but got caught up in the moment of being alive and with friends.
"Avoid edible food-like substances."
M. Pollan had a catchy demonstration with a Mcd's double quarter pounder with cheese. He poured out a calculated amount of oil to represent the embodied oil involved with the processing of the product through areas like transportation and fertilizer. The 26oz of oil turned out to be chocolate for the demonstration. So after the event, I drank Three (8oz) glasses of chocolate syrup because I knew they were just going to toss it. Who in their right mind would drink 24oz of Chcolate syrup?, Beth helped with the last (2 oz). When the rightful owner of the sandwich approached, I asked her about the burger and explained my diet. She is a vegetarian, and was just going to try to give it away, or throw it away. So I may have bent a rule. what do you think?
-I may be sick.
Briefly- ate some of Beth's bartered banana bread, made from waste-stream-fair trade-bananas, ate a few bananas, and found a turkey sandwich in the trash. Shared the unopened Pop-Tarts with on the car-ride up. After a guessing game, they turned out to be SMORES flavor. Beth also shared some of her banana bread with the group. Another successful feed from the waste-stream.
-Wed. Feb 3 was the first day of completely eating from the waste stream = three weeks ago.
