Just the Facts

What exactly is the purpose of the information being passed on in this Blog? The intention is not just to give a list of food that I ate out of the trash. While being committed and honestly facing the challenge of sustaining my life through our waste stream, real issues are going to come to the plate. When is the last time you saw somebody digging in the trash? The usual reactions I see from others looking at me is the distinct face of instant and gagging nausea. When I know someone has an eye on me, I put on a sh*t eating grin and look them in the eye as I stuff whatever I found in my pocket.

Now, some turning point has hit me. As much as I want to get out my soapbox and preach of the injustice and inequality of our great nation’s consume-discard capitalistic lifestyles, the best way to affect your thinking of the choices you make on a daily basis may be to present the facts. This experience is to be presented as an example of how lives can be sustained on what we throw away. There is no suggestion for you to follow suit, but only to see that, as pennies add up over time, so does our waste stream.

Because of the unfavorable weather conditions slowing student activity, I had a feeling today was going to be tougher to find fresh food in the waste stream on campus. Although there is no worry for hunger, because of the two remaining Kroger dumpster pizzas, I’m prepared to expand my search. At a late night dinner at Bert's place, the situation was, she was cooking for her and Tim, while I munched on the oranges and turkey found earlier. They are always good company, so the moment wasn’t too awkward. She has fired up the teapot with a mix from the Winter Farmers Market. Though the night’s sustainable pontifications, more questions were defined for this experiment. 1) More clearly defining leftovers and expired food in there involvement with handouts; 2) How to handle social/community dinners; 3) Not eating; 4) Giving away my food.

The morning started with 4 cups of water and yesterdays sugar cookie and bear claw. Randomly found 2 cherry tomatoes and a hand-full of BBQ chips. The main sweep: mixed fruit, celery, carrots, Bite of Mc. Double Cheeseburger/fries, hand-full of BBQ chips, bite of turkey sandwich, whole turkey sandwich, Italian provolone sub, ½ of a turkey wrap, orange, Clementine.
