RAMC Pot-Luck
For the Macosky Center pot-luck I brought out the last watermelon from my Findlay Ohio collection. It was a pleasure to slice such a good fruit and share it with others. Of course is was from Mexico, and we all know that Mexico is the place to go to get good watermelon, not my Dad's backyard. Thomas gave me some more thoughts on the question of "where is the waste-stream." My stance, at this point is that the food was produced and prepared for one purpose, to feed people; that once the item goes beyond it's purpose then it is being wasted and is in the waste-stream. When I visit the Macosky Center, things are different because of composting. I agree that composting is to return the discarded food into the nutrient cycle is a better option than the landfill. But according to my description of food waste, food heading towards the compost bin is still a waste of food because it has traveled beyond its intended purpose.
The points being made by Thomas are mind boggling. He supports the compost question. Listen to this: I eat food and defecate. The majority of the time, I use toilets that flush into a waster treatment center to be returned into drinking water. (We poop in our drinking waster ... civilized?) When we poop in these typical facilities the nutrients are not being directly returned into the ecological cycle of food production. Human manure (humanure), in most cases, does not reenter the cycle. I'm wasting food. Composting food scraps may just be a wiser destination for leftovers.
This is great. We need to start composting humanure to complete the natural system. Good thoughts.

Greg Boulos of Blackberry Meadows Organic Farm and CSA. Interesting, after listening to some of his experiences, he triggered the moment of the day. He brought cookies (among homemade ice cream and ice with violets in it) to share at the pot-luck. At the end of the night he offered them to me, knowing of my diet. The story was that these cookies were from a Second Harvest food bank. He had received them from family who works with the Erie, PA food Bank. This place is able to collaborate with some groceries and gather goods before they hit the dumpster. I Dig It. Do You?
Also with the cookies, at the pot-luck, I made off with Organic Sugar, and some Flower mix that couldn't be reused.
